The knee is the largest joint in the body and is susceptible to many different painful conditions. Sporting injuries are common, but because the knee joint deals with so much load and wear and tear throughout daily life, it is a common joint to suffer from Osteoarthritis.
The knee is a hinge joint which limits it range of movement. It gains most of its stability from strong surrounding ligaments but also from the cushioning cartilage that is within the joint. Unlike the Shoulder which moves in multiple directions and is held together by muscles, the knee is a hinge joint and gains its stability from strong ligaments and cushioning cartilages.
The knee is powered by strong muscles on the front (Quadriceps) and on the back (Hamstrings and Calf). The kneecap (Patella) acts like a pulley on the front of the knee and increases the power of the Quadriceps considerably. Consequently, the kneecap is under high forces and is often a source of pain as well.

The knee is a joint which loves moving. Treatment of the knee will almost always include exercises to help restore its function and maintain and/or improve the strength of the muscles which act upon the knee.
Other than exercise, the goal is always to restore correct function and eliminate pain and swelling. Treatment will include:
